myRiderSafe: every rider arrives ready for practical training.
An online course and assessment that replaced reading the rider handbook, so every learner motorcyclist in South Australia arrives at basic training with the knowledge, and the attitude, to make the most of it.

The moment that mattered
A handbook isn’t a readiness check.
As part of reforming motorcycle rider training, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport wanted trainees better prepared for onsite basic training. Until then they were expected to read the rider handbook first, which left knowledge and attitudes varying widely from one trainee to the next.
What they needed
- Interactive, scenario-based learning in place of facts on a page
- Every learner at the minimum standard before practical training
- No need to be tested on core knowledge onsite
- Safe riding attitudes alongside the knowledge
What we built
From facts on a page to riding scenarios.
With the department and Compono, we took myRiderSafe from discovery through design, development and implementation. It’s a fully accessible course with integrated assessment that teaches motorcycle safety through real stories, branching scenarios and interactive challenges, on any device, at the learner’s own pace.
It launched in December 2024, alongside reformed motorcycle licensing.
How it works
Effective learning design
Media variety, regular concept checks and review, controlled progression and higher-order thinking.
Reliable, valid assessment
Carefully calibrated test components for a fair measure of competency.
Values and attitudes
Why the rules exist, and a lifelong habit of responsible riding.
WCAG 2.1 AA
Colour contrast, alternative text, video captions and transcripts.

What changed
Every trainee arrives with the minimum knowledge.
myRiderSafe has strengthened licensing in South Australia and shows how existing written content can become accessible, effective digital education. Learner and returning riders alike say it has raised their awareness of the risks, and onsite trainers no longer carry the whole load of passing on critical information face to face.
“It was a detailed course, it didn’t feel like so much information that I couldn’t take in or remember any of it, it felt more like gradual information and definitely the way to learn!”myRiderSafe learner, South Australia
