U Class Licence: a world first for ultra high powered vehicles.

When South Australia legislated a new licence for ultra high powered vehicles, every existing and new driver needed to show they understood the safety features and had the right attitude. We built the world-first course and test that made it possible.

The moment that mattered

Experienced drivers, a new requirement.

After serious crashes involving ultra high powered vehicles, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport committed to legislation so that only drivers who understood UHPV safety features, and had the right attitude, could drive one. Existing UHPV drivers had never needed a course or test before, and many knew their cars well, so the content had to be completely relevant to safety and the tone had to keep them on side.

What they needed

  • Engage experienced drivers and keep them on side
  • Present technical safety concepts clearly, and check they’re understood
  • A course and test drivers can complete remotely

What we built

Short, visual and respectful of what drivers know.

With the department and Compono, we built a short, fully accessible course with integrated assessment. 3D videos and animations show the safety features and the risks, interactive challenges check understanding, and a 15-question U Class Licence Knowledge Test can be completed on any device, at the driver’s own pace.

How it works

Side-by-side demonstrations

Simulated driving comparisons show how hazards and poor vehicle settings affect control.

Safety attitude

Why each safety feature exists, and why it must be used.

Effective learning design

Media variety, regular concept checks, controlled progression and higher-order thinking.

WCAG 2.1 AA

Colour contrast, alternative text, video captions and transcripts.

What changed

A benchmark for licensing a new kind of risk.

The U Class Licence Course is the first of its kind in the world and has been central to implementing South Australia’s new legislation, both administratively and educationally. Drivers have responded well to the relevance of the messaging and the use of visuals.

“I appreciate the information conveyed within the course and thought it was well prepared and informative as well as engaging during all stages. A job well done by the development team.”
