Rail · Aurizon

Aurizon: drivers who know the train before they meet it.

A national rollout of VR driver training for Australia’s largest rail freight operator, so trainee drivers practise inspections, shunting and air brakes until they’re ready, without tying up live locomotives and wagons.

The moment that mattered

High standards, scarce rolling stock.

Aurizon is known for safety, efficiency and innovation across a vast network. Keeping driver training at that standard, consistently in every state, while making the most of locomotives and wagons needed a new approach.

What they needed

  • Standardise training procedures nationally
  • Reduce reliance on live locomotives and wagons
  • Improve learner safety and confidence
  • Better training outcomes and performance

What we built

A structured path from learning to doing.

The VR Driver Training Suite takes trainees through a structured, multi-stage path, from guided learning to independent practice, across custom inspection modules and shunting simulations.

We also turned the VR content into online modules, aligned all of it to the 2024 curriculum, onboarded trainers with a facilitator guide, and keep it current through a subscription.

How it works

Inspections

Locomotive inspection, pre-departure rake inspection and air brake systems, practised step by step.

Shunting

Coupling and uncoupling, roll-by inspections, start-up and shut-down, and multi-locomotive configurations.

Beyond the headset

The same content as online modules and Digital Guides, so learning carries on without VR hardware.

What changed

A new standard for rail driver training.

Our work with Aurizon has delivered scalable, consistent, high-impact driver training across the country, and set a new standard for rail operations nationally.

“When drivers start working on real trains, they’re already familiar with the scale, size, noise and the procedures.”
