New South Wales and Tasmania · Transport for NSW
DKT Online: a learner test built for everyone.
A fully accessible learner course and test for New South Wales and Tasmania. It replaced the 45-question written test with learning anyone can take, with text to speech and the option to switch language at any point.

The moment that mattered
The first step to a licence, open to everyone.
The Driver Knowledge Test was an in-person test, offered only at service centres that were costly to run and hard to reach across a state the size of NSW. Around 30% of NSW households speak a language other than English, and about 14% of working-age adults have lower literacy or learning difficulties, which meant higher failure rates and people giving up on a licence.
What they needed
- Deeper understanding in place of rote memorisation
- Full accessibility to WCAG 2.1 AA, and beyond it
- Equal access for culturally and linguistically diverse communities
- No travel to a service centre, wherever you live
What we built
A course and test anyone can take.
With Transport for NSW and Compono, we took the DKT from discovery through design, development and implementation. The result is a fully accessible online course with integrated assessment, taught through real-life stories, branching scenarios and interactive challenges, on any device and at the learner’s own pace.
Tasmania now uses the same platform.
How it works
Effective learning design
Media variety, regular concept checks and review, controlled progression and higher-order thinking.
Reliable, valid assessment
Carefully calibrated test components for a fair measure of competency.
WCAG 2.1 AA
Colour contrast, alternative text, captions and transcripts, keyboard navigation, focus and zoom.
Text to speech
Every screen can be read aloud, so learners with lower literacy or vision impairment can learn and test with less difficulty.
Switch language anytime
All text in the learner’s chosen language, changeable at any point in the course or the test.

What changed
A breakthrough in accessible driver training.
DKT Online has reached people across NSW and beyond, including those with learning difficulties and from CALD backgrounds, opening up access to transport and work. Fewer in-person tests mean significant savings for Transport for NSW, and higher pass rates for the people the old test left behind confirm the impact.
Transport for NSW sees it as a model for future digital initiatives.
“The examples and explanations were clear and helpful in understanding the rules and responsibilities as a driver. Overall, it provided valuable knowledge that will contribute to safer driving.”DKT Online learner, New South Wales
