The Challenge

KiwiRail faced a significant training challenge: Limited access to live wagons and locomotives was restricting hands-on learning for Yard and Locomotive Engineer trainees.

Traditional methods relied heavily on classroom instruction, leaving a gap in practical experience that could lead to safety risks and operational inefficiencies. With rail freight projected to grow and ongoing workforce shortages, KiwiRail needed an innovative, scalable solution to ensure trainees developed real-world skills without, disrupting operations or requiring constant supervision.

Key Objectives

Enhance hands-on training without requiring live locomotives or yards.
